About Bookbinding Equipment
For the business owner looking to save some time and money in a tight economy while still meeting the demands of putting together professional booklets, presentations, and informational pamphlets investing in your own bookbinding equipment can be a necessary step in reducing costs. A brief description of the types of bookbinding equipment should help to direct you to the right equipment to meet your needs at the price you can afford.
One of the most common styles of bookbinding in North America is comb binding. It is one of the cheapest styles available for binding. Comb binding easily lays flat for easy copying of individual pages and a comb opener can be used to open the binding to make editing a breeze. Combs are available in a variety of sizes both round and oval varying from 3/16th of in inch to 2 inches. These combs are also available in a variety of colors. Because it is commonplace it is sometimes seen as “cheap” looking. This perspective has led to other forms of bookbinding to take precedence in the office.
Coil binding is the next least expensive option for office binding. Spiral coil binding winds a single plastic wire down the edge of the book or document. Spiral coil binding still offers the advantage of opening flat and wrapping around the spine for . The wire bindings are available in up to 60 different colors allowing companies to color coordinate their bindings to their letterheads or company logos. The coil sizes are available up to 2 inches, coil binding documents thicker than 1 inch thick can be difficult.
Wire binding is the next grade up for office binding. Wire binding closes a C shaped wire around the edge of a document allowing the pages to lay flat for copying or wrap around for easy reading. The wire binding looks more stylish than the plastic coil but is not ideal for mailing as the metal wire can be bent and damaged, versus the plastic wire which more easily retains its shape. Documents smaller than 9/16th of an inch and documents from 5/8th of an inch up to 1 ¼ thick require a different hole pattern requiring a machine that does both or two separate machines.
One last option for book binding is thermal book binding. Thermal book binding involves setting a heat activated glue strip to either a hard or soft cover. This option provides the most professional look for a document and makes available an option of limited run hard cover books. It is also the method of bookbinding that is the most expensive for materials.
If you require different book binding methods for different documents another option to consider is a bookbinding machine specializing in two or more of these binding methods. Talking to an office machine supplier can help you further decide on which bookbinding machine is right for your needs.
