Installing an outdoor security camera system is a great way to protect your home from unwanted intruders and thieves.  However, picking out where to install the actual cameras can be a little tricky.  In general though, there are a few principles that you should keep in mind if you want to get the most out of your camera system.

First, make sure that your cameras are placed over any possible entry points for intruders.  For more homes, this will be your doors and windows, especially those in darker corners of your home.  You can also think about putting them at entry points to your property, such as your driveway, if your home is harder to access.

Next, always make sure that you cameras are easily visible to the potential burglars.  One of the biggest values any security system will give your home is in its deterrent factor, so make sure that potential thieves know that they will be on tape.  One great way to do this is to use your camera system in conjunction with motion sensor lights.  When someone passes the lights, the motion sensor will activate both the lights and the camera.  In addition to making your camera more visible, this will also make the picture that your camera takes higher quality as even the best home night vision cameras have trouble seeing beyond a few feet.

Finally, make sure that while your cameras can be seen, they can’t be touched.  Keeping them out of reach will make sure that nobody vandalizes them and that the burglars can’t reach up to disable the cameras as well.
