Ways to Improve Your Sleep
There are few things in life that are more frustrating than not being able to sleep. While most of us can live with an occasional missed night’s sleep, having the situation continue for a while can really wreck havoc on your life. The side effects of insomnia are significant and can range from decreased performance to increased chance of developing chronic illness. If you are struggling with sleep, here are some ways to improve your chances of sleeping better.
Improve Your Environment
Most people do not realize just how much their sleeping environment can impact your ability to sleep. While you probably know that a bad mattress can make it difficult to sleep well, you may not think about things like light, temperature and the cleanliness of your room. It has been said that when your physical environment is cluttered, your mind is also cluttered. Before you turn in each night, you should make sure that your bedroom is clean and free of clutter. Kept those cookie crumbs out of the bed because they are sure to leave you tossing or turning at night.
You should also make sure that the temperature in your home is not keeping you up. Most of us sleep best around 68 degrees, but you can experiment with what works best for you. A bright street light or the early morning sunlight can really have a negative impact on your ability to sleep soundly. If getting blackout shades is not an option, you can purchase a sleep mask to block out the light.
Watch Your Diet
People who consume caffeine in the afternoon generally underestimate how much it can impact their sleep. If you are searching for how to fall asleep fast, one of the first things that you should consider is your diet. Stay away from caffeine and sugar in the late afternoon or evening. You should try to eat several hours before you go to bed and keep your evening meal light. A heavy meal too close to bed time can leave your body working too hard to sleep well.
